Guest Speaker: Nick Freije, Assistant Chief Engineer for Mission Architecture, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command
Mr. Nick Freije currently serves as Assistant Chief Engineer for Mission Architecture, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR). Appointed to the Senior Executive Service (SES) in August 2020, he is the NAVWAR Digital Engineering Transformation Lead that is responsible for establishing architecture and engineering policy and processes for C4ISR, Business/IT and Space Systems. He is the authority in the area of Systems Engineering, Systems-of-Systems engineering and Cyber Security. He is the Cybersecurity Technical Authority for the Navy.
As the NAVWAR Chief Engineer’s Deputy Warranting Officer for Cybersecurity (CS), he is responsible for Information Systems (IS) security engineering, Risk Management Framework (RMF) support, CS risk assessments, CS developmental test and evaluation (T&E), software assurance, penetration testing, CYBERSAFE, forensics, and development of defensive CS capabilities.
As the NAVWAR Chief Engineer’s Deputy Warranting Officer for Enterprise/Systems Engineering, he is responsible for all engineering efforts dedicated to the overall design, integration, implementation, sustainment, and disposal of Navy IT systems and warfighting capabilities throughout the life cycle to include the assessment and application of requirements, standards, and processes to ensure integration, interoperability, and reliability. Previously, Mr. Freije served as the Technical Director, Fleet Readiness Directorate at NAVWAR.
Mr. Nick Freije previously served in the Senior Level (SL) position within the Fleet Readiness Directorate as their Technical Director. Beginning in 2018, he served as the NAVWAR Technical Authority for C4ISR operational issues. He also served as the Senior Technical Advisor to the Fleet, PEO C4I/Space Systems, PEO Enterprise Information Systems and other government agencies.
Mr. Freije began his professional career in 1992 as the Engineering Manager for K&H Industry, manufacturing electrical plugs, connectors and portable fluorescent lights. This experience developed his knowledge of the design, engineering and manufacturing processes. In 1995, he accepted a position at Naval Undersea Warfare Center, where he provided key technical expertise for the automation of the various components of the Los Angeles Class Submarine Radio Room.
In 2000, Mr. Freije began his career with NAVWAR, serving as the Chief Engineer for the Automated Digital Network System (ADNS). In 2002, he was promoted to Chief Engineer for the Afloat Networks Programs, which oversaw the acquisition and engineering components of Systems Engineering on Naval C4I Information Technology (IT) Network Equipment and applications for several ACAT I, II and III systems. In 2008, Mr. Freije assumed the role of the Consolidate Afloat Network and Enterprise Services (CANES) Technical Director. He oversaw the establishment, definition and technical execution of the C4I ACAT 1 network program. In 2010, Mr. Freije became the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific Networks, Communications, and Cyber Security Lead Systems Engineer.
In 2016, Mr. Freije assumed the Senior Scientific Technical Manager (SSTM) position within NIWC Pacific’s Office of the Chief Engineer, serving as the Deputy Chief Engineer for Systems Engineering. He was responsible for providing the appropriate Systems Engineering rigor, development environments and technical reviews for over 800 programs/projects, executed by more than 4,500 engineers and scientists. Mr. Freije attended the Broome Community College where he earned an Associate of Science degree. He furthered his education at the University of Buffalo, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
Mr. Freije’s personal awards include the Meritorious Unit Commendation as well as various Naval Special Act Awards. He was awarded the 2009 Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year Award. Mr. Freije was awarded the DON 2014 Acquisition Workforce Individual Achievement Award for his leadership on the NGEN contract. He was a recipient of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 2018.
